For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by language. Not just the words themselves, but the stories they tell, the meanings hidden beneath the surface, and the way a carefully chosen phrase can reveal far more than it appears to at first glance.
That fascination became my profession. As a professional translator, writer and language specialist with more than three decades of experience, I've built my career around precision, research and understanding context. Every translation begins with a simple principle: don't assume - verify. That same philosophy became the foundation of this book.
Like many people, I grew up with the music of George Michael. His songs were always there, woven into the soundtrack of my life. While others were drawn to the melodies, I found myself listening to the lyrics. Over the years, I began to realise that beneath the chart-topping hits lay something much deeper: recurring themes of identity, love, shame, freedom, faith, grief and self-acceptance that echoed throughout his entire body of work.
The more interviews, documentaries and authorised sources I explored, the more those lyrics revealed themselves as fragments of an extraordinary personal story. My aim has never been to impose my own interpretation, but to let George explain his own work whenever possible, using his own words.
My background as a translator taught me that every quotation deserves to be checked, every source verified and every claim traced back to its origin. In an age where information is easily repeated without being questioned, I believe careful research matters more than ever. I've therefore approached this project with the same standards that have guided my professional career.
